A good number of Beverly Hills residents have made their stance clear when it comes to the proposed hotel/condominium project slated to occur on the site of the current Beverly Hilton hotel. The Beverly Hills City council was delivered a petition boasting nearly 2,800 signatures (more than the 10% required for residents to pursue their cause) Thursday. The issue will now be decided by voters in November. The fight against the development and the subsequent petition stem from a “thumbs up” granted by the City council in May for the project.

Barry Bucker, the current Beverly Hills mayor feels the project is far too obtrusive for the area. Bucker feels the development would offset the balance between commercial and residential developments in the area.

Despite the significant amount of opposition, Oasis West (the developer) hopes to fully pursue the project. The company claims that the development could spur city revenue to the tune of a $750B over a 30 year time period. The developer has full intentions of funding road improvements, claiming that it will set aside $10M for such projects.

However, it seems that resident’s have yet to be convinced. Worries of increased traffic congestion, parking issues, and excessive resource utilization are barring the project from resonating well with many residents - even with it’s revenue potential.

The man behind the petition, Larry Larson, hopes to continue building opposition towards the proposal for November. In the meantime, he hopes to give residents a better idea of the exact benefits and consequences of the proposed project. If the proposal falls through, the developer will be given a year to revise plans, thus making the project more appealing.
