While they may be esteemed in Britain for their grip on the luxury housing market, the Candy brothers are getting anything but a warm reception in Beverly Hills.

Christian and Nick Candy began flipping flats in London in 1995, the first with a €6,000 loan from their grandmother. Over a twelve year span, the duo amassed a large fortune and fell into possession of some very notable private developments. Recent estimates have put the duo’s global portfolio at €9 B.

However impressive their track record may be, the pair’s recent attempt to delve into California’s luxury housing market has drawn significant opposition. This opposition has been fueled by the Jewish community residing in Beverly Hills.

When Jewish residents learned the Candy brothers were behind the 9900 Wilshire development, they began to bombard city officials with complaints. These complaints stemmed from worry that the development would be financed by the prime minister of Qatar (who is also known to be the partial owner of a Middle Eastern publication that is allegedly anti-semetic).

Outrcy from residents has encouraged local councillors to demand that the pair publicize any Middle Eastern funding the development may be receiving, according to the Beverly Hills Blog. The pair has received funding from that particular region on prior projects.

It appears as though the brothers have made a significant effort to quell worry among residents, including arranging visits and distributing letters to residents. While the brothers have assured residents and city officials that the project is not funded by any Middle Eastern entity, they have accused people of being “narrow-minded” on the matter, citing that America does indeed have ties with Qatar.
